Our Roots

Mentorship isn't across a desk; it's walking side-by-side.

Born from grassroots organizers determined to create enduring mentorship spaces right in the neighborhood, we build practical tools together through authentic connection.

The Beginning

Built from neighborhood commitment

Black Like Cole started when a small circle of local educators and parents decided to stop waiting for distant institutions to notice our youth. We gathered in living rooms and community halls to design spaces centered on cultural pride, reliable support, and mutual respect.

Leadership decisions here are never handed down from above. They are co-created with youth members, parents, and local leaders who share a vision for self-determined futures.

Working Principles

Radical hospitality and cultural sovereignty

We pull up a chair for everyone who walks through the door because real leadership begins when your voice is genuinely heard and respected. Our workshops and gatherings reject sterile institutional models in favor of warm, intergenerational spaces where personal growth feels natural and enduring.

Long-term success is measured not by remote metrics, but by sustained relationships, personal confidence, and active civic participation. When community spaces are built with care, our youth recognize their own power immediately.

Family Perspective

For the first time, my teenager found a room where his questions were welcomed and his heritage was celebrated. That steady footing changed everything for our family.
